The Southern Connecticut Conference Western and Eastern Sectional meets were held on Wednesday and Thursday nights at Floyd Little Athletic Conference in New Haven with the winners not only taking home team trophies but athletes qualified for the SCC Championships on Saturday, February 3rd in New Haven.
SCC Western Sectional
Xavier totally dominated the competition at the SCC Boys Western Sectional meet on Wednesday, scoring in all but one event and amassing ten or more points in twelve of the 15 events. The Falcons scored 175 points, setting a meet record for points, to outdistance Hamden (64 points) and Notre Dame West Haven (51 points). They had wins in the 4 x 800m, 1600 Sprint Medley Relay, 4x400m,Stylz Mitchell (55m), Samuel Forte (55m hurdles), Xavier Laudati (600m), Owen Martin (1000m), Jack Ouellette (1600m), Hunter Feitel (pole vault) and Jacob Harkins (shot put). Forte’s time of 7.66 is now not only the #2 time in CT so far this season, it broke Darin Bell’s school record of 7.71 set in 1984
Mercy won their program’s sixth sectional girls title in a squeaker by scoring 91 points to Sacred Heart Academy’s 86 with Career Magnet taking third with 58 points. Just like Xavier, the Tigers had a well balanced attack scoring in 13 of 15 events with wins in the 4x800m, sprint medley, 4x400m relays. Sacred Heart produced two significant performances. Maya Quaranta had a season best of 39-2.0 in the shot put which is just over a foot and a half off Anna Siciliano’s state leading throw. Juliette Forstrom, the Class SS cross country champion, took over her school record with a winning time of 5:14.84 in the 1600m.
SCC Eastern Sectional
Lyman Hall boys moved up from 5th last year to claim the sectional title with 115 points to defending champion Hillhouse’s 84 points. Amity finished 3rd with 69 points. The Trojans did extremely well in the relays, claiming wins in the 4x200m, sprint medley and 4x400m, even taking 4th in the 4x800m to earn 34 out of a possible 40 relay points. Timothy Conklin grabbed the 600m (1:27.44) with his brother Thomas Conklin taking the 1000m (2:38.25). Senior Michael Fisher scored ten points in the 300m (35.79) to add to their winning total.
Khalil Antoine had a great day for Hillhouse, taking 2nd in the 55m hurdles and long jump, but really shined in the high jump. He cleared 6-9 to take over the state lead by himself and…
