On Friday evening, one of the most competitive track meets in the world took place in Boston, with high school, college and open athletes all competing on the same track to compete in the John Thomas Terrier Classic at Boston University’s lightning fast 200m oval. Several Connecticut distance runners traveled to Boston to compete  against collegiate and open athletes. Even though these performances won’t count for CIAC qualifying times or records, these athletes took advantage of the extra competition to put up huge personal bests.

State Open cross country champion Steven Hergenrother of Ridgefield ran his first race of the indoor season and ran 8:24.12 for 3000m. That was about two and half seconds faster than he ran last year at this meet. He finished 14th in his heat and finished 76th out of 192 finishers. The time is the 5th fastest time among high schoolers nationally and converts to about a 9:01 for 3200m. While the performance won’t qualify him for the post season or state records because it was an open race against college runners, he ran the fastest time of any CT high school runner.

Hergenrother’s cross country teammates, also running unattached, shined on Friday night. Juniors Magnus Manley (4:17.82) and Charles Lovett (4:20.12) and senior Sage Humphrey (4:26.13) could all join together to run a potentially national championship 4 x mile. Other Tigers Trevor Fuller (4:30.14), Sullivan Dunn (4:36.32), Alexander Glenn (4:40.03) are developing nicely as they prepare for cross country season next fall where they hope to defend their State Open and New England titles.

Other CT high school athletes who made the trip to compete at the meet in Boston include:
