Cougars prepped for Husky Classic and Whitworth Invitational


PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams carry a combined 10 times/marks that rank in the top-30 in the nation heading into the final stretch of the 2023-24 indoor season.  The Cougars will compete this Friday and Saturday at both the Whitworth Invitational at The Podium in Spokane, Wash., as well as the Husky Classic at the Dempsey Indoor Center in Seattle.

The Cougs had an eventful weekend last week, tallying a number of PR’s over two days at both the Riverfront Invitational at The Podium as well as the NM Collegiate Classic in Albuquerque, N.M.

Washington State saw three school records fall between the two meets, beginning with Jasneet Nijjar’s indoor program-record 53.72 in the Riverfront Invitational women’s 400-meter run.  Nijjar followed her record performance with another WSU record, running a 37.67 to win the women’s 200m on day two.

Multi athlete Mason Mahacek completed his first full heptathlon as a Cougar, finishing runner-up at the NM Collegiate Classic with a program-record, 5,762 points.

In the Rankings:

– Washington State’s men’s program came in at No. 6 in the West Region in this week’s USTFCCCA regional TFRI.

– Washington State’s women’s program came in at No. 8 in the West Region in this week’s USTFCCCA regional TFRI.

Mason Lawyer: 60m dash, tied for ninth in NCAA DI.

– Grant Buckmiller: 400m, 12th in NCAA DI.

Mason Mahacek: heptathlon, 13th in NCAA DI.

– Micaela De Mello: 60m hurdles, tied for 17th in NCAA DI.

– Zenah Cheptoo: 3,000m, 26th in NCAA DI.

Eva Lowder: Pole Vaut, 19th in NCAA DI.

– Women’s DMR: No. 17 in NCAA DI.

– Men’s 4 X 400m Relay: No. 17 in NCAA DI.

– Event Squad Rankings:

    – Women’s 3,000m: 23rd in NCAA DI

    – Men’s 200m: 25th in NCAA DI

    – Men’s 60m: 15th in NCAA DI

    – Pole Vault: 25th in NCAA DI
