NEW YORK – In one of the premier indoor track and field meets of the season, Wisconsin men’s track and field standout Adam Spencer made a statement with a school-record performance in the Wanamaker Mile at the 2024 Millrose Games at The Armory.
Spencer crossed the line in 3 minutes, 52.70 seconds to finish sixth in the loaded field and was the top collegian in the invite.
Spencer, a native of Australia, surpassed Oliver Hoare’s time of 3:54.83 that was set in 2019. Spencer’s time is the second-fastest in Big Ten Conference history and Spencer is the No. 7 performer in NCAA history in the mile.
Former Badgers Alicia Monson and Morgan McDonald shined on Sunday as well. Monson broke the American record in the 2-mile, finishing in 9 minutes, 9.7 seconds. It is her fourth American record, including the indoor 3000 meters, outdoor 5000, and 10000 meters.
McDonald, the 2019 NCAA cross country national champion, continued his comeback to the track by securing the Australian record in the 2-mile. He finished fifth in the race at 8:12.01.

On Adam Spencer’s performance
“When you get an invite to the a meet of this caliber you have to show up and play. Adam did a good job this afternoon in his first serious race of 2024. He looked short of races early on but stayed with it over the final 600 meters and beat some big boys and came away with a big PR and Badger record. There’s more in his tank but it’s still February and it’s going to be a long year.”.
Up Next: Spencer and the Badgers travel to Dubuque, Iowa, and South Bend, Indiana, for the Solomon Butler Classic (Dubuque) and the Alex Wilson Invite, hosted by Notre Dame on Feb. 16 – 17. Events in Dubuque begin Friday, while the events at Notre Dame get underway Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
