NEW ORLEANS — The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced that the Tennessee men’s and women’s cross country squads were recognized as All-Academic Teams, while nine UT student-athletes were honored as All-Academic Athletes for their combined performances on the course and in the classroom.
USTFCCCA All-Academic Team awards were presented to cross country programs that boasted a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.0 or above at the end of the 2023 fall semester. The Tennessee women boasted a combined GPA of 3.68, while the men posted a 3.36.
It marks the eighth consecutive season that both squads received the honor.
In order to qualify for All-Academic Athlete distinction, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 on a 4.0 scale and finish in the top 25 at the NCAA Regional Championships or as an All-American at the NCAA Championships.
Yaseen Abdalla, Eli Nahom and Gabriel Sanchez represented the Vols as All-Academic Athletes, while six women claimed the honors for the Big Orange: Jillian Candelino, Kayla Gholar, Ashley Jones, Caroline Lyerly, Jessie Secor and Rachel Sutliff. Tennessee’s nine total honorees were the most of any team in the SEC and the most for the program in a single year since at least 2006.
