BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Southeastern Conference office announced Wednesday afternoon that Tennessee track & field graduate student Jacob Lewis was selected as SEC Indoor Track & Field Men’s Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year, recognizing his stellar efforts on the track and in the classroom over the course of his collegiate career.
The Anthem, Arizona, native is in his second season with the Vols after a standout four-year career at Grand Canyon University from 2018-22. In cross country, he is a two-time NCAA All-South Region performer and was UT’s top finisher this past fall at the NCAA Cross Country National Championships. He carried that success into the indoor track season and became the second Vol in program history to break four minutes in the mile earlier this month — posting a time of 3:59.83 at the Music City Challenge on Feb. 9 in Nashville. Lewis is working toward his master’s degree in Agricultural Leadership, Education and Communication, maintains a 3.97 grade point average and is a two-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
While competing for the Antelopes, he claimed a pair of Western Athletic Conference individual titles and tallied six WAC medal-winning performances in the middle-distance events — specializing in the mile, 1,500-meter and 800-meter. Lewis completed his Bachelor of Arts in History at GCU in May of 2022 with a 3.96 GPA.
Lewis is the first Vol to receive SEC Track & Field Scholar Athlete of the Year honors since Matt Maloney won the award for the 2010 outdoor season. Lewis shares the 2024 accolade with three other athletes: Auburn’s Ryan Kinnane, Missouri’s Mitchell Weber and South Carolina’s Dylan Taggart. The award winners will be recognized at the upcoming 2024 SEC Indoor Championships, set for Friday and Saturday at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
