SEATTLE – The final Dempsey home meet, Friday and Saturday’s Ken Shannon Last Chance Meet, provides one of the best fields of the indoor season. Joined by the majority of the Pac-12 programs, Washington’s focus is to make a last push for as many people inside the national top-16 as possible so as to quality for the NCAA Indoor Championships. And for those athletes who are already high up on those lists, this weekend provides a final home meet to fine tune before NCAAs.

The meet begins Friday at 12 noon with the multi-events. The first field event Friday starts at 1 p.m., and the first track event gets going at 3 p.m. Saturday resumes with field events and multis at 10 a.m., and the first track races at 10:45. Runnerspace.com is once again the place to stream the meet.

As the name implies, this weekend’s meet is not only the final Dempsey meet of the season, but the final regular season meet before the fields are finalized for the NCAA Indoor Championships on Mar. 8-9 in Boston. Top-16 is the requirement for individuals to make it to Boston.

The Huskies head into this week ranked season-highs on both the men’s and women’s sides, No. 5 nationally on the men’s side, and No. 6 on the women’s side.

Looking at the top-16, the UW women currently have 10 marks in that range, with a couple more just on the outside looking in. “Bubble” positions are currently held by Amanda Moll and Nastassja Campbell (tied for 14th in the pole vault at 14-4), Wilma Nielsen (14th in the 800m at 2:02.89), Sara Borton (16th in the pole vault at 14-3 ¼), Kaia Tupu-South (16th in the shot put at 56-4). A few Dawgs are looking to break into the top-16 this week: Beatrice Asomaning (17th in the weight at 70-1), Marlena Preigh (22nd in the 800m at 2:03.59), Haley Herberg (22nd in the 5000m at 15:38.37).

The men have 11 marks ranked in the top-16, with a few of those hoping for improvements this weekend to shore up their chances: 14th-ranked Ronan McMahon-Staggs in the mile (3:54.61), and Max Manson and Mathis Bresko (tied for 11th in the pole vault at 18-1 ¼). Dawgs looking for more tickets in this weekend’s entries include Nathan Green (8th in the mile but racing the 800m this week where he ranks 21st); and Evan Jenkins (22nd in the 3000m but racing the mile this…
