Bears Close Out Indoor Season, Look Ahead To Outdoor
SEATTLE – California track & field closed out its indoor season in solid fashion on Saturday, posting three more program top-10 marks to bring its weekend total up to nine and earning four additional top-three finishes at the Ken Shannon Invitational.
Senior Ryan Lacefield continued her meteoric rise up Cal’s 400m list, moving from No. 5 to No. 2 after shaving .62 seconds off her PR to finish the race in 54.36. That time made her the fifth Golden Bear sprinter to clinch a top-three program mark this year, joining David Foster (60m), Chase Williams (60m), Makhaila Mills (60m) and Isaiah Shaw (400m).
All four of Cal’s triple jumpers made their respective finals – senior Busola Akinduro and freshmen Myla Canty for the women, freshmen Obi Nwafor and Jeremiah Bolaños for the men. Akinduro earned second place in the former with a leap of 12.72m (41-8.75), while Canty finished two places behind at 12.43m (40-9.5); Nwafor took sixth in the men’s contest at 14.45m (47-5) and Bolaños eighth at 14.31m (46-11.5).
Likewise, all the Bears’ shot putters made their finals, with senior Jeff Duensing and redshirt freshman Nick Godbehere representing the men and redshirt junior Caisa-Marie Lindfors representing the women. Duensing posted a season-best 18.44m (60-6) to take second place in the field and finish two spots ahead of Godbehere, whose personal-best 18.12m (59-5.5) moved him up to No. 10 in program history. Lindfors later clinched a top-three finish of her own, taking third at 16.43m (53-11).
Cal had a small contingent of mile runners as well, led by senior Garrett MacQuiddy and his fourth career sub-four-minute mile of 3:58.82 that earned him third place out of 51 total competitors. He was followed in the men’s competition by classmate Carrick Denker (4:07.26) and sophomore Caden Carney (4:10.65), the latter of whom posted a season best. On the women’s side, senior Claire Yerby knocked over eight seconds off her own season best to finish in 4:46.67, while sophomore Georgia McCorkle set a new personal record at 4:57.35.
