BOSTON — Washington State freshman Eva Lowder finished in a tie for 15th in the women’s pole vault, and Mason Mahecek placed 12th in the heptathlon as the pair represented WSU at the 2024 NCAA Indoor Championships this weekend. Lowder’s final mark of 4.15m/ 13′ 7.25″ in the women’s pole vault closed the first day of competition at The TRACK at New Balance, while Mahacek wrapped up the final three events in the heptathlon Saturday afternoon in downtown Boston.
Lowder, who qualified for the championships with a program-record mark of 4.35m at last month’s Ken Shannon Last Chance Invite, cleared 4.15m on her third attempt Friday to earn second team all-America honors. She is the first Cougar vaulter to earn indoor all-America honors since Tyson Byers in 2007, and the freshman to do so since Tamara Diles in 2002.
Having transferred from Michigan after the first four years of his collegiate career, Mahacek made his indoor nationals debut this weekend behind his program-record 5,762-point showing at the NM Collegiate Classic earlier this indoor season. Mahacek closed out his indoor championships debut with ninth and sixth-place finishes, respectively, in the pole vault and 1,000m run.
Washington State men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams turn the page to the 2024 outdoor season next week as the teams travel south to compete in the Arizona Spring Break Fiesta (Mar 16).
