Duke Earns Quintet of Top-10 Placements to Open Penn Relays


PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Duke track and field turned in a strong and total team performance on the first day of the Penn Relays as all five Blue Devils that competed Thursday – Emily Cole, Christian Johnson, Moorea Mitchell, Aimar Palma Simo and Christian Toro – placed inside the top 10 of their respective events.
 
TOP PERFORMANCES

  • The Blue Devil trio of graduate students Christian Johnson and Aimar Palma Simo and freshman Christian Toro led the way with a strong group performance that saw each individual place among the top five.
  • Johnson paced the group with a runner-up finish after tossing the hammer 69.72m (228-9 feet) on his third attempt, Palma Simo right behind in third thanks to his second throw measuring 69.39m (227-8 feet).
  • Toro parlayed a throw of 65.18m (213-10 feet) on his second attempt into a fifth-place finish. The rookie’s mark signified a new personal best and boosted his No. 3 all-time program mark.
  • On the women’s side, Moorea Mitchell placed seventh in the event. The senior’s best effort came on her second attempt, with her throw measuring 58.28m (191-2 feet).
  • Graduate student Emily Cole capped the Friday slate in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase and helped the Blue Devils end the day with five top-10 finishes, placing ninth in the race after clocking 10:15.44.

Duke resumes action at the Penn Relays Friday afternoon with the Blue Devils’ slate featuring six track events starting with the women’s 4x100m relay at 1:20 p.m. Over in Charlotte, Duke gets its weekend at the Charlotte Invitational going at 7:30 p.m., via the women’s 1500m.
