Cougars Start Strong at OSU High Performance Meet


CORVALLIS, Ore. — Washington State combined to post five wins on the track and an additional three wins in the field as the men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams opened the two-day Oregon State High Performance Meet Friday from Whyte Track and Field Center.

Ben Chappell finished runner-up in the men’s hammer throw, launching himself into seventh all-time in Cougar history with a lifetime-best mark of 64.82m.  Fellow hammer thrower Caden Hottman placed third with a top throw of 60.89m. Ronald Grueso Mosquera later posted the Cougars’ first throws win with a season-best mark of 52.41m to win the men’s discus competition.

Grant Buckmiller (21.15) and Lyricc Lopez (53.32) won the men’s 200m dash and 400m hurdles, respectively, while Aiden Emerson captured a first-place finish in the evening’s distance carnival after posting a season-best 3:49.04 in the men’s 1,500m invitational. Leif Swanson picked up a win in the men’s 5,000m invitational (14:22.27), and Cristina Molteni capped the night for the Cougs with a 34:38.56 to win the women’s 10,000m invitational.

Washington State swept the men’s and women’s pole vault competitions, as Gavin Dimick (4.74m) and Eva Lowder (3.94) helped bring the WSU win total to eight on day one from Corvallils.

Day two on the track will begin with the men’s and women’s 4x100m relays at 2 p.m., while the field events resume Saturday with the women’s javelin  competition Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
