Stellar Shaina: Zinter claims Big Ten heptathlon crown on Day 2 of Championships

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Fueled by wins in the final two events, Wisconsin women’s track and field sophomore Shaina Zinter won the heptathlon to highlight action for the Badgers on Saturday at the 2024 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Zinter finished the seven-discipline event with a score of 5,439 points, defeating Penn State’s Maddie Pitts, who was second with 5,422 points.

The Badger sophomore began the second day of the heptathlon with a mark of 17 feet, 2 ¾ inches (5.25 meters) in the long jump, which put her in third place after five events with 3,926 points, 153 off the lead.

However, Zinter put on a clinic in the final two events, winning both the javelin and 800 meters to claim the Big Ten crown. The St. Paul native threw the javelin 119-8 (36.48m) before running the 800 meters in 2:13.54 to become the first Badger to win the Big Ten heptathlon title since Olympian Georgia Ellenwood in 2018. Zinter also became the seventh different Badger to claim a conference heptathlon title.

Freshman Kyla Saleh took 12th with a score of 4,374 points in her first Big Ten heptathlon.

Sophomore Danni Langseth found a podium finish in the shot put with a mark of 52-8 ¾ (16.07m) to finish eighth. She started the competition strong with her best throw of the afternoon.

A day after advancing to the final in the 200 meters, Kiley Robbins punched her ticket to the 100-meter finals thanks to a qualifying time of 11.59. That time was the seventh-fastest on Saturday. She’ll race in tomorrow’s 100 meters at 12:50 p.m. CT and the 200 meters at 1:35 p.m. CT.

Freshman Elissa Perkins placed 15th in the long jump as she soared 18-5 ¾ (5.63 meters) in her Big Ten Outdoor Championships debut.

Up Next: The championships wrap up on Sunday with field events starting at 10 a.m., and running events at 11:45 a.m. The meet will be streamed live on B1G+.
