FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Sophomore John Paredes narrowly missed out on a semifinal berth in the 110m Hurdles while sophomore A.J. McGloflin finished six inches short of his season best in the high jump to highlight Washington State’s third day at the 2024 NCAA West First Round Friday at John McDonnell Field.

In the 3000m Steeplechase, junior Kelvin Limo crossed the line in a time of 8:57.50, eighth in the first heat and 21st overall in his first NCAA Championship appearance. Paredes, competing in the 110m Hurdles, narrowly missed out on advancing to the semifinal round in Eugene, Ore., as he finished in a time of 13.54 seconds, third in his heat and 14th overall. Twelve runners advanced to the semifinal round and Paredes missed out on the 12th spot by .02 seconds.

Senior Jared McAlvey, who two weeks ago captured the 400m Hurdles Pac-12 title, could not find the magic today as he finished fifth in his heat and 18th overall after finishing in a time of 51.25 seconds, well off his season-best time of 49.95.

Senior Brian Barsaiya capped his Cougar career with a 27th-place finish in the 5000m. Barsaiya, who two days ago finished 16th in the 10000m, crossed the line in a time of 14.23.03, 14th in the second heat. The day closed for WSU in the 4x400m Relay, consisting of Ethan Willems, Grant Buckmiller, Mason Lawyer and McAlvey, as the Cougars posted a time of 3:05.46, just shy of the school-record time of 3:05.38 the group set two weeks ago at the Pac-12 Championships. WSU finished the event 14th overall and fifth in its heat.

In Saturday’s lone field event for the Cougars, sophomore A.J. McGloflin started strong in the high jump, clearing his first three heights without a miss. The Spokane, Wash., native cleared 2.09m / 6′ 10 ÂĽ”, but the next height of 2.14m / 7′ ÂĽ” proved too much Friday as he missed all three attempts, finishing 19th overall. The 2.09m was just shy of his season-best of 2.10m set last month in Corvallis, Ore.
