CLEMSON, S.C. – After running the fifth-fastest time in the nation in the 800 meters and representing Clemson at Nationals, newcomer Gladys Chepngetich has been named the ACC Outdoor Women’s Freshman of the Year as announced by the conference office on Thursday.
With the honor, Chepngetich officially secured a Freshman of the Year season sweep as she was also crowned the ACC Women’s Freshman of the Year for Cross Country and Indoor Track & Field.
Chepngetich was unstoppable for the Tigers during the outdoor campaign as she shined in the 800 meters, 1500 meters and the 4×400 relay. The freshman also was part of the Sprint Medley Relay (SMR) team that secured first-place and the wheel at Penn Relays.
At the ACC Outdoor Championships, Chepngetich won the gold medal in the 800 and the silver medal in the 1500.
The freshman set a new personal best in the 800 as she ran 1:59.81 at the NCAA East Regionals, which is one of the fastest times in NCAA history. Chepngetich is one of eight women in history to break two minutes in the event.
Chepngetich was tabbed a Second Team All-American after running 2:02.45 at Nationals to secure a 16th place overall finish. The freshman was also a part of the 4×400 relay team that represented Clemson in Eugene as they finished 17th overall with a time of 3:32.66.
