EUGENE, Ore. – The past two NCAA Champions in the 1,500-meters, Joe Waskom and Nathan Green, have reached their first career Olympic Trials finals. Waskom and Green each grabbed top-five finishes in the semifinals tonight at Hayward Field, and they’ll race for Paris this coming Monday, June 24, at 5:47 p.m.
Waskom, now racing professionally for adidas, placed fifth in the first of the two semifinal heats in 3:38.29 to auto advance. Longtime teammate Luke Houser, now running professionally for the Brooks Beasts, was close behind in seventh in 3:39.06, but he would fall just short of advancing.
In the second semifinal, rising senior Nathan Green powered across the line in fourth-place in 3:34.49, which regained the School Record for Green, moving him back ahead of Waskom. It also puts Green at No. 3 in NCAA history.
UW will now have two of the twelve men vying for Paris in the metric mile. Waskom was the USA runner-up last year, qualifying for the World Championships, while Green also made the U.S. final a year ago and placed seventh.
Also competing at his first Olympic Trials today was Pac-12 long jump champion Prestin Artis. Artis came up just a few inches shy of reaching the final, as he finished 16th overall today with a best jump of 25-3 ½.
No Huskies will be in action on Sunday at the Trials.
