EUGENE, Ore. – Freshman twins Amanda and Hana Moll both cleared a path into the finals of the U.S. Olympic Trials tonight at Hayward Field, as the Trials head into the homestretch. The All-American duo from Olympia will be two of 13 women competing on Sunday for a spot on Team USA for the Paris Olympics.

The Molls will be the final two Huskies in action over the weekend when they vault at 3:15 p.m. on Sunday. Today there were five more Husky alumni in action in semifinal competition on the track, but all five had their competitions ended short of the finals.

Hana Moll, the 2024 NCAA Indoor Champion in the pole vault, cleared all three heights necessary today to make the final without a single miss. Amanda Moll, coming off a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, needed a third-attempt clearance at the opening bar, then got over the second height on a second attempt, and she then made the final bar at 14-9 on a first attempt.

The first semifinal on the track featuring former Huskies was the women’s 1,500-meters, with Eleanor Fulton (class of ’16) in heat one and Anna Gibson (class of ’23) in heat two. Fulton placed seventh in her semi in a time of 4:08.27 to temporarily hold the final time qualifying spot, but that time wouldn’t hold up after the second section, and she finished 15th overall with twelve women making the final. Gibson ran a solid time of 4:09.75 but that was good for just 11th in another very fast semi.

Jonathan Birchman, who just wrapped his senior season at the NCAA Outdoor meet, raced in the 400-meter hurdles semifinals, and he finished seventh in his section in 51.86 seconds and would not advance.

The 800-meter semis then had two more 2023 UW grads in Sam Ellis and Cass Elliott. Elliott was sixth in the first heat in 1:47.70. Ellis made an aggressive move on the second lap of heat three, but he tied up late and finished eighth in 1:51.04.
