Seven Terps Earn USTFCCCA All-Academic Honors


COLLEGE PARK, MD – Seven Maryland track and field/cross country student-athletes were named U.S. Track & Field And Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic as announced by the organization. Additionally, both the men’s and women’s track & field teams earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Team distinction.
 
From the men’s team, Eric Albright and Rhys Allen earned the individual honors. The women’s team had five student-athletes earn the accolade: Tolu Akinduro, Jayla Bynum, Chioma Njoku, Kayla Thorpe, and Jennessa Wolfe.
 

To earn the individual all-academic honor, student-athletes must hold a minimum cumulative grade-point-average of 3.25 and have completed at least two semesters at their current institution. Additionally, they must have finished in the top 96 in any championship individual event (or top 48 in a relay event) during the indoor season or participated in any round of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships finishing among the top 48 in the East/West regionals during the outdoor season.
 
For the teams to be honored, a program must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 for an institutions NCAA squad list.
 
This is the latest academic honor for Albright, Allen, Akinduro, Bynum, and Njoku as they each earned College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Honors in June.
 
For the 2024 spring semester, the Terps turned in another banner semester in the classroom. The men’s team had 20 student-athletes on the Honor Roll, 11 on the Dean’s List, and five with perfect 4.0 GPAs. The women’s team had 35 on the Honor Roll, 18 on the Dean’s List (the most of any program), and five with perfect 4.0 GPAs as well. The women’s cross country team had 23 on the Honor Roll, 10 on the Dean’s List, and five with 4.0 GPAs.
 

Additionally, 13 members of the men’s and women’s track & field teams earned Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Honors. The award is given to Big Ten student-athletes who hold a 3.7-or-higher GPA for the previous academic year and are letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution. From the men’s side, Albright, Peter Capozzoli, and Bryce Middleton earned the distinction, while Anna Albergo, Jayla Bynum, Madison Depry, Amanda Eliker, Kirstin Nichols, Jessica Sutter, Kayla Woods, and Sophia Zell did so on the women’s team.
