Jones, Cockrell and Norman Advance to Event Finals At Paris Olympics

Jasmine Jones and Anna Cockrell advanced to the women’s 400m hurdles final and Michael Norman advanced to the men’s 400m dash final during the fifth day track and field at the 2024 Paris Olympics held at Stade de France in Paris, France today (Aug. 6). 

  • Jasmine Jones (USC, 2024) of USA took second in her women’s 400m hurdles semifinal with a time of 53.83 to automatically advance to the final.  The women’s 400m hurdles final will be on Aug. 8 at 12:25 p.m.  Joining her in the final will be Anna Cockrell (USC, 2021) who took second in her semifinal heat with a time of 52.90.  There was a moment of anxiousness for Cockrell as she raised her hand to stop the start of the race and reset in the blocks, but the officials did not see her and started the race.  They called the group back, looked at the tape and restarted the heat.  Amalie Iuel had a time of 54.88 to place fifth in her heat and 14th overall.  Cockrell had the third and Jones the seventh-fastest times among the qualifiers to the final.  Cockrell will be in lane No. 7 and Jones in lane No. 9 in the final in two days.
  • Michael Norman (USC, 2019) took second in his men’s 400m semifinals heat with a time of 44.26 to automatically advance to the final.  Norman was fifth on time among the qualifiers to the final which is tomorrow at 12:20 p.m.  Norman will be running in lane No. 4 in the final.  Norman was also a 2020 Olympics 400m finalist, placing fifth.
  • Kendall Ellis (USC, 2018) utilized the women’s 400m repechage nicely, cruising to victory in her heat with a time of 50.44 and automatically advancing to the event semifinal on Aug. 7 at 11:45 a.m.  Ellis’ time was the best of all the runners in the repechage round.  Ellis will be in the third semifinal, running out of lane No. 2.
  • Aaron Brown (USC, 2014) of Canada placed second in his men’s 200m repechage heat with a time of 20.42, but he was also second overall and advances to the 200m semifinal on Aug. 7 at 11:02. Andre De Grasse (USC, 2015) of Canada qualified yesterday to the 200m semifinals.  In tomorrow’s semifinals, De Grasse will be in the first semifinal heat in lane No. 5 and Brown will be in the second semifinal heat in lane No. 3.
