On day eight of Paris 2024, athletics events delivered historic moments and unexpected outcomes on a exciting evening of track and field.

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone of the USA set a new world record in the women’s 400m hurdles, clocking 50.37 seconds to win gold. Her compatriot Anna Cockrell, earned silver with a personal best of 51.87 seconds, while Femke Bol of the Netherlands took bronze in 52.15 seconds.

In the heptathlon, Great Britain’s Katarina Johnson-Thompson leads overnight after the first four events, positioning herself well for day two on Friday as she sets her sight on Olympic gold. She sits just 48 points ahead of defending champion Nafissatou Thiam. The remaining events—long jump, javelin, and 800m—will determine the final standings.

The men’s 200m final saw Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo upset the USA’s Noah Lyles, taking gold with an African record of 19.46 seconds. Kenny Bednarek, also of the USA claimed silver in 19.62 seconds, with Lyles finishing in 19.70 seconds for bronze.

Grant Holloway of the USA finally prevailed in what had alluded him for so long and dominated the men’s 110m hurdles, winning gold in 12.99 seconds. Daniel Roberts secured a 1-2 for the USA, securing silver in 13.09 (0.085), and Jamaica’s Rasheed Broadbell earned bronze with a season’s best of 13.09 (.088).

In men’s javelin, Arshad Nadeem won Pakistan’s first Olympic athletics gold, breaking the Olympic record with a throw of 92.97 meters, surpassing defending champion India’s Neeraj Chopra who took silver with a 89.45 meter throw. Grenada’s Anderson Peters claimed third with a best throw of 88.54 meters. 

Tara Davis-Woodhall of the USA captured gold in the women’s long jump, leaping 7.10 meters. Germany’s Malaika Mihambo took silver with 6.98 meters, and Team USA’s Jasmine Moore won bronze with 6.96 meters, making history with medals in both long jump and triple jump at the same Games.
