ArmoryTrack.org - News - The Armory Remembers George Kochman

The Armory is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of George Kochman, a legend in the Staten Island track and field community. George made his mark as an athlete, coach, and reporter over the course of his many decades in the sport.

George grew up in New Jersey before going on to attend Georgetown University, where he ran track. He began his coaching career at St. Joseph’s HS, before becoming the head coach at Monsignor Farrell in 1968. In his 12 years at Farrell, the Lions won 32 Staten Island titles, and his 1973 two mile relay team won the Championship of America at the Penn Relays. Following his tenure at Farrell, George coached at Wagner College for six years.

At the conclusion of his coaching career, George remained deeply involved with the sport, reporting on high school and local races for both the Staten Island Advance and SI Live. His career as a sportswriter spanned 37 years, covering races, spotlighting local runners, compiling calendars, and more.

In 2015, George was honored by The Armory as a recipient of the Stan Saplin Award, alongside his close friend Derek Alvez. This award is presented annually to members of the media who have made significant contributions to the sport of track and field.

George is survived by his wife Rosemary, their five children, and four grandchildren. A member of the CHSAA Hall of Fame, he will be greatly missed by the entire community.
