Blue Devils Sweep Meet Versus North Carolina A&T


HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. – Duke cross country opened the 2024 season with a sweep of North Carolina A&T as both men’s and women’s squads placed first in their respective races Friday morning at the Occoneechee Speedway.
The Duke men totaled 21 points to earn the win while the women finished with 25 points to pick up the first-place finish. Individually, both teams had three athletes finish inside the top five.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Graduate student Matthew Farrell paced the overall efforts in the men’s 4.7K as he finished atop the field via a time of 14:32.0.
  • Senior Beck Wittstadt (14:48.3) and sophomore Sean Morello (15:07.6) were next to cross the finish line placing third and fourth, respectively.
  • The Blue Devils had four more runners finish inside the top 10 in juniors Nick Falk and Jeremy Kain, graduate student Jack Kovach and sophomore Rendon Kuykendall. Kain (sixth) and Kovach (seventh) rounded out the Duke scorers clocking 15:12.3 and 15:12.6, respectively, with Kuykendall (15:17.5) and Falk (15:37.3) placing ninth and 10th.
  • Juniors Ryan Banko and Colin Friend also competed for the Blue Devils finishing 11th and 12th. Banko ran 15:37.5 while Friend crossed the finish line in 15:46.4.
  • On the women’s side was graduate student Abby Paczewski leading the charge in the 3.5K with a third-place finish of 12:55.4. Sophomore Lindsay Hausman, graduate students Lucy Gagnon and Tori Starcher and rookie Grace Geyer claimed spots four through seven as the quartet finished within tenths of a second of each other.
  • Hausman edged Starcher (13:13.6) for fourth courtesy of a 13:13.5 finish. Geyer and Gagnon rounded out the foursome with times of 13:13.7 and 13:13.8 – good for sixth and seventh.
