Pitt Sweeps Panther Opener to Begin 2024 Season


PITTSBURGH – The men’s and women’s cross country teams both came out on top at the 2024 Panther Opener, held at Schenley Park. Quintin Gatons took first in the men’s 5K and Winnie Incorvaia came in first in the women’s 5K race.

Men’s Recap

Gatons, who finished third at last year’s Panther Opener, was the first to cross the line this year with a time of 14:40.4. Luke Simpson followed behind in second place with a pace of 14:50.1. Luke Miller finished 6th in 15:01.3 and Ethan Fingerhut crossed the line in 15:03.1, for 7th place. Sam Otis and Ethan Papa rounded out the top ten in 9th and 10th places, respectively. Otis recorded a time of 15:08.2 and Papa’s time was 15:15.0. 

Pitt’s total team score was 25. Carnegie Mellon came in second with 37 points and Robert Morris took third with 78 points.

Women’s Recap

Incorvaia, last year’s runner up, was the first competitor to finish this year as she set the pace of 17:34.70. Teammate Sadie Carey-Tharp was close behind for a second place finish in 17:35.30. Pitt had five Panthers, Olivia Bufalini, Ellen Baker, Camy Kiser, Sarah Hurst and Gianna Cagliola finish consecutively, securing fifth through ninth place. 

Pitt led the team score total with 21 points. Robert Morris grabbed silver with 57 points and Carnegie Mellon concluded the tri-meet with 62 points.

Up Next

The Panthers will have a break from competition before returning to the course on Friday, September 13th at the Spiked Shoe Invitational, hosted by Penn State in University Park, PA.
