Cal Freshman Throws 67.21m On 4th Attempt
LIMA, Peru – California track and field freshman Valentina Savva closed out the World U20 Athletics Championships on Saturday at Estádio Nacional by claiming a silver medal in the hammer throw.
In her third trip to the World U20 hammer throw final, Savva separated herself from the field with a throw of 67.21m (220-6) on her fourth attempt. It was her only throw of the day that went past 66 meters, falling less than a meter shy of her all-time best.
China’s Jiale Zhang – the only athlete who out threw Savva in the qualification round – secured gold early on with the best mark of the day, opening things up with a throw of 68.95m.
