CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Amy Deem has appointed Alex Bloom as the new vertical jumps and combined events coach for the Hurricanes.
Bloom comes from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. He joined the Golden Flashes staff in August 2021 as an assistant coach specializing in horizontal jumps and multis.
Bloom is a 2018 graduate of the University of Cincinnati where he earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise and fitness. Bloom then continued his education at Xavier University, where he earned a master’s degree in coaching education and athlete development in 2020.
“I am excited to announce the hiring and return of Coach Alex Bloom to Coral Gables. He will be a great addition to our staff, and I am confident in his abilities to lead our student-athletes in the vertical jumps and combined events. Coach Bloom’s previous coaching history here at Miami will bring a familiar face to the staff, and now with the experience he gained at Kent State, I look forward to watching him prepare current and future Hurricanes for success,” Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Amy Deem said.
Under Bloom’s leadership, the Golden Flashes excelled both indoors and outdoors during the 2022-23 season. Three Flashes – Alexander Shields (110m hurdles), Alexandre Malanda (triple jump), and Svenia De Coninck (high jump) – all qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Championships, with Shields and Malanda winning their respective events at both the indoor and outdoor MAC Championships. Shields also took home the heptathlon title at the Indoor Championships.
Bloom was named the Mid-American Conference Men’s Outdoor Assistant Coach of the Year in 2022. He coached three conference champions between the 2022 indoor and outdoor season in the heptathlon, decathlon, and outdoor men’s long jump. He also helped lead Serena Choi to a second-place finish in the triple jump at the 2022 Indoor Championships. Three members of the men’s team – Alexandre Malanda, Anthony Millner and Alex Shields – qualified for the 2022 NCAA East Regional under Bloom’s guidance.
Prior to joining the Kent State staff, Bloom served as a volunteer assistant at the University of Miami, assisting daily with jumps and combined events training while helping coach the sprints and hurdles group as needed. Student-athletes he coached set four school records and two qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships and U.S. Olympic Trials….
