CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – A pair of runners from Clemson and Virginia Tech have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Cross Country Performers of the Week for the second week of the season. It marks the first cross country weekly honors of the year for both schools.
Silvia Jelelgo impressed in her collegiate debut for Clemson, winning the USC Upstate Eye Opener and earning both ACC Women’s Performer and Freshman of the Week honors. The Bomet, Kenya, native finished the women’s 5K with a time of 16:38.90. Jelelgo’s debut was just five-hundredths of a second faster than Clemson teammate, Judy Kosgei, who finished with a time of 16:38.95. Jelelgo’s first-place finish helped the Tigers win the season-opening meet as a team, as they needed just 26 points to secure the team title.
Virginia Tech’s Nicholas Kipchirchir followed suit, sweeping the ACC Men’s Performer and Freshman of the Week honors. In his collegiate debut, Kipchirchir won the Virginia Tech Invitational with a 6K time of 17:43.5. The freshman helped lead the Hokies to a team first-place finish at the home meet, needing just 22 points to secure the victory.
