Coats Leads Terps With Top-15 Finish At Spiked Shoe Invitational


UNIVERSITY PARK, PALed by Rose Coats’ finishing among the top-15 runners, the Maryland cross country team placed eighth overall among 17 teams at the Spiked Shoe Invitational Hosted by Penn State on Friday morning.

Coats was the first to cross for the Terps with a time of 20:47.0 to finish 14th overall among 221 total runners. She was followed by Katie Turk (36th) with a time of 21:15.4.

Among the other top five finishers for Maryland were Eva Rogers (47th, 21:32.4), Katie Altieri (75th, 21:52.3), and Rubie Goffena (119th, 22:36.1).

 

Penn State won the overall team title with 42 points, followed by Syracuse (62) and Princeton (78). The meet featured both Penn State and the University of Pennsylvania which are ranked No. 2 and No. 3 in the USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Regional Rankings. Syracuse was ranked No. 29 overall in the preseason coaches poll and is No. 3 in the Northeast Regional Ranking.

Coach Valmon’s Thoughts:

“Rose ran a gutsy race going out with the front pack to lead the way. The full group worked hard to compete with many of the top teams in our region. I am proud of the way this group is coming together and making great strides each week.”

Up Next: Maryland will resume competition in three weeks at the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, PA on Oct. 5.
