ACC Names Cross Country Performers of the Week


CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Clemson’s Judy Kosgei has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Cross Country Performer of the Week, while Notre Dame’s Carter Soloman earned the ACC Men’s Performer of the Week honors. Sharon Chepchirchir and Nicholas Kipchirchir, a pair of Virginia Tech student-athletes, have also been named the ACC Women’s and Men’s Freshman Performers of the Week, respectively, for cross country meets occurring September 16-22.
 
Kosgei dominated in her second meet as a Tiger, winning the women’s 5K at the Adidas XC Challenge in Cary, North Carolina. She finished the race with a time of 16:11.1, earning her second top-three finish of the season. Kosgei paced Clemson to a 1-2-3 finish with teammates Silvia Jelego and Gladys Chepngetich finishing second and third, respectively. The Tigers finished second as a team, totaling 51 points.
 
Solomon ran a course-record time of 23:40.5 to capture the individual first-place finish at the 45th National Catholic Invitational. The grad student had a three-second margin of victory and helped pace No. 7 Notre Dame to the team title at the event, logging 16 points – just one above the best-possible team score of 15.
 
Chepchirchir captured the event win in the women’s 6K in the Hokie Invitational, finishing with a time of 20:55.4. The Kapsabet, Kenya, native record an average mile time of 5:36.6 in her first official event win as a Hokie. Chepchirchir ran unattached in the Hokies’ first meet, but also won the individual title, beginning her career a perfect 2-for-2.
 
Kipchirchir claimed the individual title for the men’s 8K race at the Hokie Invitational, collecting his second career win as a Hokie. The freshman clocked a personal best of 22:41.9 on his way to earning his second ACC Freshman of the Week honor.  Kipchirchir averaged 4:34 per mile in the race and finished 43.4 seconds ahead of the next fastest competitor.
