SEATTLE – Washington Director of Track & Field Maurica Powell was thrilled to announce two additions to the squad as the Huskies started winter quarter and prepare for the Dempsey Indoor home opener. The pair of transfers, Mia Cochran from Arkansas and Gioana Lopizzo from Colorado, will add their talents to the distance crew.
Cochran, originally from Pittsburgh, Pa., just completed her third cross country season for the Razorbacks, finishing 41st at the national championships, just one spot out of All-America honors. She is a First Team All-American in the DMR, as she led off the fourth-place-finishing Arkansas squad at the 2024 NCAA Indoor meet. She has a mile PR of 4:34.70, a 3,000-meter best of 9:07.36, and a 5,000m PR of 15:57.43.
Lopizzo is a true freshman who redshirted her first semester in Boulder in the fall. She was a top recruit out of Encinitas, California, taking fourth overall at the 2024 Nike Outdoor Nationals in the 2-mile run. Lopizzo was the California state cross country runner-up in 2023 and 2022. She set high school PRs of 4:47.76 in the mile and 9:59.08 at 3,200-meters.
