Grissom and Hurricanes Rewrite History in South Carolina – University of Miami Athletics

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The University of Miami track and field team completed the Gamecock Opener Saturday evening, with multiple Hurricanes rearranging the school’s record books.

Junior runner Gabriella Grissom clocked an impressive 600m time of 1:26.89 — shattering the school record by more than a second.

Grissom’s historic performance also stands as a new ACC record and ties BYU’s Sami Oblad for the sixth-fastest 600m time in NCAA history.

Miami newcomer George Franks shattered the school record in the men’s 300m as the Stony Brook transfer clocked 33.19 for a second place finish.

Solomon Strader (33.22), Sean Watkins Jr. (33.59) and Lance Ward (34.12) now rank second, third and fifth in school history with their respective 300m times.

Sanaa Hebron returned to the track to post Miami’s third-fastest 300m time with 38.00 for a fourth-place finish.

Heath Vernor, with a weight throw mark of 19.02m, jumps to fourth all-time in the programs history for the event. Vernor’s toss also earned him his first first-place finish of his college career.

Sophomore Maddie Scheier bested the 1000m competition with a school record time and personal best time of 2:51.10 — beating out Natalie Varela’s 2:52.44 set in 2022.

On the men’s distance side — senior Josh Jones clocked 4:10.94 for the second fastest indoor mile time in Hurricane history.

Jumper Aaron Kim topped the leaderboards with 2.05m high jump while thrower Erikka Hill also earned a first-place finish for the Hurricanes with a weight throw mark of 18.37m.

Next up for the Hurricanes will be a trip to Lubbock, Tx. for the Corky Classic on January 17 and 18 — hosted by Texas Tech University.
