Five things to know: Badgers head to Hawkeye State


MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men’s track and field team heads to Iowa City, Iowa, to compete in the Hawkeye Invite on Saturday. Field events start at 11 a.m. with the first running event, the men’s mile, starting at 1 p.m.

1. DOMINANT DEBUT: The throwers made a big impact in their season opener in Chicago. Senior Joseph White ruled the weight throw, recording a personal best of 70-9 ¾ (21.58m), the fifth-best mark in program history and ninth in the NCAA this season. Jason Swarens added a win in the shot put with a toss of 62-2 ¼ (18.95m), narrowly edging out White, who also threw 62-2 ¼ but finished second on attempts. Andrew Stone and Kyle Clabough rounded out a top-five sweep in the shot put.

2. SPRINTERS SHINE: Senior Elliot Harris had a breakout performance in Chicago, finishing second in the 60 meters with a personal best of 6.89 seconds and winning the 300 meters in 33.59 seconds. Harris also contributed to the Badgers’ 4×400 relay win alongside Patrick HIlby, J.J. Williams and Jalen Williams, clocking in at 3:21.29.

3. VAULTING TO THE TOP: Wisconsin’s pole vaulters swept the podium last weekend, with sophomore Hunter Cook winning the event by clearing 15-7 (4.75m). Augustus Counard-Ciechanowski and Nathan Nelson completed the sweep, finishing second and third with the same height.

5. UP NEXT: The Badgers will split up next weekend for meets in Illinois and New York, as UW will send athletes to the Fighting Illini Invite and the Dr. Sander Invitational.
