Nonnewaug boys and girls swept the first ever Berkshire League Indoor Championships. Before this year the conference in the northwest corner of the state had conducted a ‘showcase’ but it was not an official championship which makes this league the last conference in CT to conduct an indoor track championship. Nonnewaug boys and girls made history by sweeping the titles. The boys defeated Shepaug Valley 127 to 78 while the girls won by a greater amount defeating Thomaston 163 to 86.
The Nonnewaug boys won three relays, two individual events and scored in 14 of 15 events. Jake Cenatiempo was a triple gold medalist for the Chiefs. He ran a leg of the 4x800m to start the meet, then returned to win the 600m in a near PR of 1:29.55, grabbed a silver in the 1600m SMR and finished with another gold in the 4x400m. That gave the junior over a mile and a half of racing and a hand in 38 of his team’s points. Anthony Perez also added ten points winning the shot put with a distance of 42-8.25.
Quinnipiac commit, Kyle McCarron of Housatonic Valley Regional dominated the distance events winning the 1000m (2:43.54), 1600m (4:45.60) and 3200m (10:16.23). He won all three races by large margins and even set an indoor PR in the last event of the day. If that wasn’t enough, he also ran the 800m anchor leg to help his team win the 1600m SMR.
One athlete who might have an impact at the State Open is Aidan Schumacher of Northwestern. Earlier in the season the senior cleare 6-4 and is tied for a top five ranking in the CT high jump. On Friday, he cleared 6-2 which could still be a New England qualifier if he can do it at the Open
The Nonnewaug girls won eight events and didn’t give the other teams in the league much room to breathe. They just kept coming and coming and were led by sisters Sopha and Madeline Garguilo. Both girls ran half the legs in winning the 1600m sprint medley relay and 4x800m. Individually, junior Sophia won the 600m and 300m while freshman Madeline won the 1000m and was 2nd behind her sister in the 600m.
Senior Ellison McDonald also contributed big points by running legs of the winning 4x200m and SMR relay teams. Individually she won the 55m dash in 7.39 and was 2nd behind her teammate in the 300m. This trio are a big reason why Nonnewaug has qualified for Nationals in the SMR last weekend and as of Friday night have the #1 time in CT.
