The Eastern Connecticut Conference back-to-back division championships on Saturday in the Dr. Hallie E. Gregory Field House at the United States Coast Guard Academy featured a win by defending Division 2 champion Montville girls and Bacon Academy boys defeating defending champion Ledyard in the morning meet. The matinee Division 1 championship saw team titles once again attained by East Lyme boys and Norwich Free Academy girls in overwhelming fashion.
ECC Division 2 Championships
The first meet of the day featured a resurgent Bacon Academy boys team defeating Ledyard by a 101 to 91 margin with Stonington a close third with 88 points. After their runner-up finish last year, the Bobcats blended victories including three in the field events with top places in each relay to provide the margin of victory. Gold medal performances in the high jump by Weston Dzwonchyk (PR 6-2), Joshua Fenton in the pole vault (PR 13-0) and a meet record in the shot put of 55-10 by Liam Sweeney provided key points. Their track performances added big points led by Boden Paul in the 600m (PR 1:25.84) and their winning 4x180m relay team of Jacob Blanda, Joshua Fenton, Ethan Fleurose and Kaden Treat.
Griswold sophomore Tycen LaBelle was golden on the day as well as he first teamed with Dylan Bailey, Xzavier De La Rosa, Sean Silva in the 4x800m relay to finish in 8:53.73 followed by a win in the 1600m (4:37.45) and a final effort of 10:07.86 in the 3200m.
After a narrow 1.5 point margin of victory last year, the Montville girls gained a 17 point spread over Ledyard this year winning 133 to 116 points.
The Lady Wolves secured the title with victories on the track by Tiana Bamber in the 55m (7.61), Katherine Myjak in the 55m hurdles (9.30) the 4x400m relay of Evelyn Granskog, Peyton Cook, Adeline Smith, MacKenzie O’Donnell (SB 4:29.86) and in the field led by Ashlynn Audoin in the Shot Put (30-8), Myjak in the long jump (15-05) and defending pole vault champion Kamryn Pilkus with her PR height of 11-00.
Hazel DeLucia, Lyman Memorial’s cross country All State performer, had a busy day running almost 5k in winning the 1000m (PR 3:04.27), the 1600m (5:24.33) and the 3200m in 11:49.78).
Ledyard kept the meet close with several event wins including 4×800, 4×180 and the SMR while getting a win from Kaitlyn Sweeney in the 600m (1:47.26).
