With very limited indoor tracks and unpredictable weather patterns in the northeast, a pattern of storms can throw a real kink in the indoor track schedule. The FCIAC Indoor Track and Field championships were originally supposed to be on Thursday at Floyd Little Athletic Center but were postponed to Saturday and moved to Southern Connecticut with the shot put taking place at Wilton on Friday night. But with another storm coming through the state only about two-thirds of the meet could be completed on Saturday because the conference superintendents made the decision that the meet had to stop at 5 pm in order to make sure everyone got home before the snow was expected to arrive around 8 pm.
With nine events completed on the boys side, Danbury led the way by a score of 55-48 over Greenwich with Ridgefield only six points away from 2nd place. But after they concluded the meet on Monday at Staples, the Hatters extended their lead over the Cardinals and came out on top by the score of 97 to 80.
The girls were able to get 10 of 15 events competed with New Canaan holding a slight four point advantage over Greenwich with a score of 53-49. Wilton finished off day two of the three day meet in third with 36 points. But by the time the dust settled it remained tight with the Rams holding on for a 71-66 win over the Cardinals. Charlotte Moore was instrumental in the win, as she took home three gold medals. At the Yale Invitational, she anchored the 4x800m to a state leading time and she joined with Lauren Casey, Gabrielle Savelli and Radea Raleva once again to claim the win in 9:47.32. Moore returned only an hour later to run the 1000m where she was content to stick behind the leaders and use a final lap kick to just nip Greenwich’s Eliana Daplyn at the line. Her time of 3:01.76 was not only her PR but the 7th fastest time in the state this season. She took advantage of the two days of rest and was able to run another PR of 11:13.31 which gave her the 4th fastest time in the state.
New Canaan is a true track and field team as they received important points on the infield. Seniors Cora Shooshan and Lauren Smith won their specialities to add important team points. Shooshan, was able to clear 5 feet in the high jump and Smith tossed the shot 36-3.25 and also earned a 6th place medal in the pole vault to add 21 big points to their total.
