SEATTLE – The Husky track and field teams will have an impressive group of fourteen entries set to chase championships in Virginia Beach, Va. at the NCAA Indoor meet. Individual and team national titles will be decided Friday-Saturday, Mar. 14-15, at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.
Ranking in the top-16 in every individual event or top-12 in each relay was the standard as usual to reach indoors. Once the declarations were made, UW ended up with eight men’s entries comprised of seven individuals and one relay, and the women have six entries, with one relay and four individuals, with Amina Maatoug entered in two events, the mile and the 3k.
The men are loaded up in the mid-distance events as has been the case in recent years. UW has three men out of the 16 in the 800-meters: Justin O’Toole, Kyle Reinheimer, and Cole Lindhorst. All three are transfers in their first years as Huskies.
Nathan Green will look to continue UW’s streak of titles in the mile and 1,500-meters. He had the NCAA’s third-fastest time this year in the mile, but the two top-ranked men each scratched out of the mile, so Green goes in with the top seed time of 3:50.74, and Ronan McMahon-Staggs is second overall at 3:51.85. Green just won two Big Ten titles on the DMR and in the 3k. The men’s DMR, which ran the fastest time in world history, will be in the mix though potentially with a different lineup than the team that set the record.
Big Ten Indoor champion Scott Toney will compete in the pole vault, and Big Ten Indoor runner-up in the heptathlon, Jami Schlueter, makes his first NCAA Indoor appearance.
The women will feature Maatoug and Chloe Foerster in the women’s mile. Both Maatoug and Foerster won Big Ten Indoor titles, but neither ran the mile at the conference meet. Maatoug won the 3,000-meters and Foerster won the 800-meters. Maatoug will attempt the mile/3k double in Virginia.
The women’s DMR is seeded fourth with its school record time, but like the men it may have a different order with Foerster and Maatoug in the mile semis which come before the DMR.
