NANJING, China – Former Utah track & field All-American and Olympian Simone Plourde is set to compete for Team Canada at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China, from March 21-23.
This is the first time the World Indoor Championships have been held in China with over 500 athletes from 120 countries competing at Nanjing’s Cube this weekend, which is part of the Nanjing Sports Training Centre of the Jiangbei New District.
This is the second-straight year Plourde has competed for her country in the 1500m race at the World Indoor Championships. She competed for Team Canada at the indoor championships last year in Glasgow – where she finished in fifth in her heat with a run of 4:13.40. She has since improved her personal best time to 4:04.07 earlier this March at the Last Chance Indoor National Qualifier in Boston – which is the third-fastest mark all-time by a Canadian.
The Montreal, Quebec, Canada, product is currently ranked No. 55 in the World Athletics Rankings heading into this weekend’s competition for the 1500m event. She is 1-of-8 Canadians competing on the women’s side and 1-of-14 total competing for Team Canada at the world championships.
Plourde, who turned pro in the summer of 2023 after her junior year at the University of Utah, graduated with a degree in kinesiology. She has since gone on to compete for Team Canada in four major world championships – including this week’s competition.
