Cougars Capture Three Event Wins Friday in Spokane and San Diego


SAN DIEGO, Calif./ SPOKANE, Wash. – Sophomore Zenah Cheptoo along with freshmen Caroline Jepkorir and Evans Kurui each captured event wins Friday to pace Washington State Track and Field at both the Buc Scoring and Aztec Invitationals. In all, the Cougars set 12 personal best times at the two events continuing a successful start to the outdoor season.
 
the 5000m and finished second in the 1500m races to start the day for the Cougs at the Aztec Invitational. Maya Nichols completed the second day of the Buc Scoring Invite with a second place 1500m finish.

In the women’s 3000m steeplechase, Jepkorir won her first event of the outdoor season with a personal best time of 10:16.68. This time is also the sixth best in program history, cementing herself into the history books yet again. Cheptoo matched Jepkorir in the win column, completing the 5000m race in 16:11.14 en route to the victory while Alaina Stone Boggs, the only other Cougar athlete in the race, finished third with a time of 16:26.87.
 
Cheptoo also finished second in the women’s 1500 with a personal best time of 4:20.42, the seventh fastest outdoor 1500 meter time in program history. Riley Pyeatt, Nicole Bissell, and Maya McCabe all set personal bests in this event as well.
 
In the men’s 1500 meter race, Kurui returned to his winning ways, finishing first with a personal-best time of 3:46.17. Brandon Moore (3:51.80) and Josphat Meli (3:55.15) also set personal-bests in the race.
 
Buc Scoring Invite
In the women’s 1500 meter race in Spokane, Maya Nichole finished second with a personal-best time of 4:39.86. Nicole Yanasak, Jaylyn Lehner, and Evelina Sitnika all put up times to finish inside the top 10.
 
Lily Herman shined in the women’s 800 meter race, finishing fourth with a PR time of 2:13.96.
 
Inside of the track, Nevaeh Wilson threw the discuss 42.34 meters to finish on the podium in second place. Lindi Kessinger also put a valiant effort with a throw of 36.53 meters, finishing eighth.
