Gamecocks Secure 17 Victories in Outdoor Opener – University of South Carolina Athletics

COLUMBIA, S.C. (March 22, 2025) – Gamecock Track & Field squad the 2025 outdoor season on Saturday, hosting the Weems Baskin Invitational at the Sheila & Morris Cregger Track. South Carolina had a busy season opener with 17 wins overall.

The men’s team was responsible for nine of the 17 wins on the day. Josiah Wrice captured a win in the 200m sprint in his first outdoor event, running 20.89 (4.1). Fellow freshman Elijah Poore won both the 1500m (3:53.47) and the 5K (15:27.81). A pair of hurdlers came through victorious for South Carolina as David Warmington claimed the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.01 (1.6) and Josue Richardson Salazar clocked 53.55 for the top spot in the 400-meter hurdles.

The Gamecock men captured three wins in the jumps during the season opener, including Nate Figgers who cleared a personal best in the high jump at 2.16m (7-1) for the seventh best outdoor high jump in South Carolina history. His high jump counterpart, Channing Ferguson, came away with a win in the long jump with a wind-legal, personal-best distance of 7.69m (25-2.75). Spencer Eison was the final jumper to claim a win on Saturday, doing so in the triple jump with a personal best distance of 15.15m (49-8.5).

The final win for the men came from the 4×400 meter relay squad of Wrice, Richardson Salazar, Bryson Miller and Devan Crumpton. The quartet stopped the clock at 3:10.66 for the season-opening win.

South Carolina’s women’s squad captured eight wins, including five on the track. Cynteria James started her season off on a high note with a win in the 100m dash, crossing the finish line at 11.23 (0.4). The Gamecocks were also victorious in the 200m sprint as Imani Rivas ran 24.28 (-0.1) in her first outdoor race as a Gamecock. Sinead Joyce walked away with the win in the 1500m, running 4:37.27 and Sarah DiVasta captured another distance victory for the Gamecocks in the 5K, clocking 18:16.14. The final win on the track for Carolina came from Josyln Hamilton in the 100-meter hurdles finals, posting a wind-aided time of 13.26 (4.7).

The Gamecock women captured three more wins in the field events in the form of Cameran Gist in the long jump (5.83m/19-1.5), Hannah Togami in the pole vault (3.75m/12-3.5) and Ella Lucas in the discus throw at 49.18m (161-4).
