Duo Of Cal Newcomers Now Own Two Program Outdoor Top-5 Marks Apiece
SACRAMENTO – The California track & field team finished up competition at the Hornet Invitational on Saturday with another three program top 10s, bringing its total to seven on the weekend, and a pair of event wins to likewise rise to seven over the past two days. Both the men’s and women’s squads finished atop the team standings with the men at 163 points and the women at 99.
For the women, it was sophomore Lucija Leko who starred with two new program top-four marks in her first collegiate outdoor meet. The Second-Team All-ACC thrower started off her day with a second-place finish in the discus, with her best throw sailing 56.85m (186-6) to trail only national leader Cierra Jackson of Fresno State and her 60.14m (197-4). Leko’s and Jackson’s positions reversed in the shot put as the Croatian native posted a mark of 16.21m (53-2) on her last throw to beat Jackson by 7.5 inches.
Jade Neser (1.64m/5-6.5) and Adriana Ellard (1.59m/5-2.5) took second and third, respectively, in the women’s high jump open section, while sophomore Ashanti Elie posted the top mark by a Golden Bear this season with a clearance of 1.69m (5-6.5) in the invite section. Over in the long jump pit, Torre Anderson posted a PR of over four inches with a leap of 5.88m (19-3.5).
On the track, Mari Testa led the Bears’ 100m hurdlers with a time of 13.85, while Fallyn Gowans shaved 0.01 second off her best time to finish in 14.42. Jaymie Ruskovich (11.99) and Jayden Hill (56.02) led the team in the 100m and 400m, respectively; Zoe Lahanas ran in the latter event for the first time as a collegian and posted a time of 59.50. Georgia McCorkle nearly matched her personal best in the 1500m with a time of 4:30.42, pacing a Bears unit that also contained first-time 1500m competitors Sophie Tau (4:33.68) and Sarah Perkins (4:46.22).
Junior Johnny Goode stood out once again on the men’s side, posting his second top-five time in two days with a 400m time of 45.86 that stands as fourth-fastest in Cal history and took second place in the field.
