Goode, Cheeks II Pick Up ACC Honors

Both Are First-Time Conference Weekly Honorees

California track & field’s Johnny Goode and Brandon Cheeks II have been named the ACC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week and ACC Men’s Freshman of the Week, respectively, as announced by the conference Tuesday. This is the first ACC weekly honor for both men, as well as the fifth and sixth recognition by any Golden Bear this year.
 
Goode, a junior transfer from the College of San Mateo, continued his breakout year with two second-place finishes at the Hornet Invitational. His 200m time of 20.71 was third fastest in Cal history and the fastest by a Golden Bear since Atlee Mahorn’s 20.20 in 1988, while his 400m time of 45.86 ranks fourth fastest in program history. Both times currently lead the ACC. Goode now owns five top-five times on Cal’s all-time lists, including the indoor school records in the 200m, 400m and 4x400m relay.
 
Cheeks II, who hails from San Diego, won the high jump open section at the Hornet Invitational with a mark of 1.97m (6-5.5), his best result as a collegian. He later competed in the long jump and was the only non-Flight 3 athlete to qualify for the final, winning his flight and finishing with a best leap of 6.83m (22-5).
 
Cal’s season continues this week at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin, Texas. The Bears will compete from Thursday-Saturday.
