Wanda Diamond League Xiamen (1st Stop of 2025 Wanda Diamond League)
Xiamen, CHN; Saturday, April 26
Egret Stadium

Prize Money: See complete details below; the women’s 5000m was one of four “Diamond+” events, which had higher prize money

NOTE: Faith Kipyegon ran the #3 all-time mark in the 1000m (2:29.21), but came up short of breaking Svetlana Masterkova’s 1996 world record of 2:28.98.  “It was all good,” said Kipyegon. “It went how I wanted, just to start my season well. I wanted to do my personal best, which was very close to the world record. It was a perfect start to my season.”  Beatrice Chebet won the women’s 5000m (and USD 20,000 because it was a “Diamond+” discipline), in a very solid 14:27.12.  She was first through 3000m in 8:38.38, but the pace slowed in the fourth kilometer.  That set up a last-lap burn-up between Chebet and Gudaf Tsegay.  Chebet sprinted away easily.  Finally, Ethiopia’s Samuel Firewu defeated Olympic gold medalist Soufiane EL Bakkali, 8:05.61 to 8:06.66.  Firewu led through the final water barrier and would not be caught-Ed.
