TUCSON, Ariz. — University of Arizona Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Fred Harvey announced today that he will retire as head coach at the end of the 2025 outdoor season. In recognition of his dedicated service, the Athletics Department will be honoring him with the title of Coach Emeritus.
“We thank Coach Harvey for his decades of dedication to the University of Arizona and the Track and Field/Cross Country program,” said Arizona Vice President and Director of Athletics Desireé Reed-Francois. “He has left a lasting mark on our student-athletes, staff, and the sport.
“Coach Harvey’s transition marks a new chapter for Arizona Track and Field/Cross Country and the department remains committed to finding a leader who will build upon the program’s tradition of excellence, foster a culture of accountability and integrity, and provide championship-level experiences for student-athletes.”
Harvey has served the University for 38 years, including the last 23 seasons leading Arizona’s programs. He has mentored 160 individuals who have garnered either Indoor or Outdoor All-America honors, 11 national champions and numerous conference titleholders. He has also coached 14 Olympians.
“After completing my 38th year of coaching and teaching at the University of Arizona, I will be retiring as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country following the 2025 Outdoor NCAA Championships,” said Harvey.
“I am honored to have been one of only four head coaches of the Track & Field program at the University of Arizona since 1951. During that time, I’ve had the pleasure of working with some of the greatest leaders in athletics history, including Cedric Dempsey, Jim Livengood, Rocky LaRose, Greg Byrne, Erika Barnes, and Dave Heeke. I am especially honored to have had the opportunity to work alongside the next great leader of Arizona Athletics, Desiree Reed-Francois. She continues to make meaningful, long-lasting contributions to the University and the Tucson community, and I am grateful for the opportunities I’ve had under her leadership.
