The defending champion Rockville boys took the title once again, with a commanding score of 189 points while the Rockville girls moved up from third to first in the North Central Connecticut Conference Championships. Ellington boys earned themselves second place (118), followed by Stafford with a score of 89.5. Canton girls secured a second place spot with 85 points, while Suffield found themselves not too far behind in third, with a score of 71 points. As expected, NCCC titles were defended, and fresh talent emerged in yesterday’s competition at Coventry HS, making for an exciting culmination of conference competition.
Boys Championship Highlights
Rockville’s victory was led by a number of dominating performances across events, with Thomas Bannon proving himself to be a standout competitor. Bannon’s javelin throw of 202-11 was just one inch off of his personal best, which also impressively ranks #6 of all time in CT’s history. Not only that, Bannon also claimed 2nd in the discus (134-9,) and placed 4th in the long jump with a leap of 19-11.75.
Alongside his teammate, Emmett Kristoff secured both a win and a meet record with a dominating 800m time of 1:57.45. He also contributed to his team’s winning 4x400m relay in addition to Matthew Woodward, Alexander Walden, and Keith Schmidt (3:32.01.)
Continuing their momentum, Rockville’s Devant Bariffe buried his competitors in the 200m at 22.88 seconds, the only finisher under 23 seconds.
Teammate Jacob Owusu also of Rockville took this competition’s long jump, soaring to a mark of 20-08.25 edging runner-up Roth Butler of Somers by over 2-inches.
No stranger to success, Rockville’s Nathan Fauteux took the pole vault win, clearing a staggering 13 feet.
Javon Stigler brought in two wins for Stafford, finishing the 100m at a fast 11.07, as well as in the 400m with a meet record time of 49.58. He also placed second in the high jump, clearing 5-10.
The 4×100 relay winning title was claimed by Ellington’s team of Mason Pathammavong, Dylan Calsetta, Shane Gesualdi, Dominic Attardo, who established a new meet record with their time of 43.41 seconds.
Adding to Ellington’s strength and success, Dylan Calsetta showed his talent in hurdling events, setting a new meet record with a winning time of 39.35 in the 300m hurdles after dominating the earlier 110m hurdles final in 15.11 seconds.
