Vol Javelin Duo Punches NCAA Tickets To Kick Off NCAA East Prelims


JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – On a rain-soaked Wednesday that included a five-hour weather delay, two Tennessee track & field athletes qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the men’s javelin to highlight Wednesday’s performances at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds in Jacksonville, Florida.
 
To qualify for the national meet, athletes must finish top 12 out of 48 competitors in their respective events at the NCAA East Prelims.
 
Redshirt freshman Roddy Schenk heaved a massive personal-best to earn his first career NCAA berth, logging a second-round toss of 69.89 meters (229-3) to finish sixth at the regional meet. The Silverdale, Washington, native now ranks 10th in school history and becomes the second UT freshman in as many years to qualify for the NCAA Championships in the javelin.
 
Schenk will be joined by teammate Kevin Burr Jr. in Eugene, after the sophomore earned his second consecutive trip to nationals with a clutch, third-round mark of 67.40m (221-1). Burr finished 12th at the regional meet, securing the final ticket punched to the 2025 NCAA Outdoor Championships out of the East Region.
 
NCAA QUARTERFINALISTS: The second-ranked Tennessee men’s squad competed in several first round preliminaries on the track Wednesday, with six athletes advancing to the quarterfinals that will take place Friday evening.

  • Sophomore Kalib Branch advanced in the 110-meter hurdles, winning Heat 4 of the competition with a time of 13.82.
  • Junior sprinter T’Mars McCallum posted the top time in the 100-meter first round, clocking in at 10.16 to automatically advance to the quarterfinals. He will be joined by Vol sophomore Davonte Howell, who posted a time of 10.37 to qualify for the next round on time.
  • A trio of Volunteers qualified for the quarterfinals of the men’s 400-meter hurdles, led by graduate student Jevon Williams who had the top time of the day in 49.80. Saad Hinti also secured a heat win in 50.42 seconds, while Harry Barton qualified on time with his mark of 50.96.
  • McCallum closed Wednesday’s action with a second heat win in the men’s 200-meter, clocking in at 20.53 to automatically advance to the quarterfinal round on Friday.
