Sawyers leaps her way to Tokyo

Just three weeks ago former European indoor Champion Jazmin Sawyers stood at her mark on the long jump runway in a competitive environment after 18 months away.

Sawyers return at the Loughborough International from a brutal achilles injury was meant to be the start of a journey to qualify for the World Championships through the traditional rankings as it was believed it would be to early for the 31-year-old to jump a Championship standard distance.

Her leap of 6.53m shocked the crowd and Sawyers and laid down a marker for the 2025 season further ahead than expected.

A second meet in Germany a week later produced a winning jump of 6.66m. Just 9cm short of the UKA World Championships qualifying stands of 6.75m.

A third meet in Greece last Friday saw Sawyers make a leap of 6.89m, the third furthest jump of her career, breaking the UKA qualification standard by 14cm and the World Athletics standard of 6.86m.

The 2014 Commonwealth Silver Medalist will now look to be selected for the European team Championships in Silesia at the end of the month.

Painter and Meadows Duo send PB’s tumbling at Nikaia

Trevor Painter and Jenny Meadows M11 Track Club training group already cemented themselves as an elite training centre in global middle distance running with a Gold for Keely Hodgkinson and a Bronze for Georgia Hunter Bell in Paris last year as well as a European indoor title for Sarah Healy in March.

Saturday saw Meeting Nikaia return to Nice and training partners Erin Wallace and Ava Lloyd line up in the opening race of the meet, the Women’s 1500m. Wallace lead from the front for the 3 and ¾ laps to come home in a mighty impressive PB of 4:02.92. She was followed behind by 19-year-old Lloyd who came home in a PB time of 4:07.45. It was Lloyd’s second PB in 7 days following her run at the Boris Hanzekovice Memorial in Zagreb of 4:10.17.
