Kurui Claims All-America, Cougs Conclude 2025

EUGENE, Ore. – The Washington State men’s track and field program competed in four events at the 2025 NCAA Division-I Outdoor Track & Field Championship to conclude the season, Wednesday night, at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus. WSU sophomore Evans Kurui finished fifth in the 10,000-meter final to clinch All-American honors, becoming the seventh Cougar in the last four seasons to garner outdoor All-American recognition.

Kurui, competing in his first outdoor championship, sat at the back of the pack early in the race, moving up throughout the race to take the lead at the final-lap bell. After getting pushed in the back on the penultimate curve, Kurui recovered, despite falling out of position, to finish in 29:10.91 and three second behind the national champion.

The Kenyan became the ninth Cougar men’s 10,000 runner to earn All-American honors and is the first WSU men’s 10,000-meter All-American since Josephat Kapkory and Patrick Muturi both earned the recognition in 1994.

Making his NCAA Outdoor Championship debut, junior Mason Lawyer competed in three events for the Cougs, beginning in the 4×100 relay alongside teammates Bryson Stubblefield, Parker Duskin, and Keenan Kuntz. The squad finished in 39.41 and 20th overall in the national semifinals after breaking the school record at the regional championships.

Lawyer returned for individual events in the 100- and 200-meter sprints. The Idaho junior clinched a 15th-place finish in the 100-meter dash, clocking a 10.20 (+1.6). In the 200-meter dash, Lawyer finished in 20.67 (+0.4), fourth in his heat and 17th overall.

The conclusion of WSU’s competition at the NCAA Championships marks the end of the 2025 outdoor season. The Cougars will break for the summer with various student-athletes competing in international events.
