EUGENE, Ore. (theACC.com) – On the opening night of the 2025 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Miami’s Devoux Deysel won the gold medal in the men’s javelin with a throw of 81.75 meters (268-2). Deysel became the first Hurricane to ever win the NCAA Division I javelin title and the first Miami men’s student-athlete to win an individual national title since 1996.
Deysel is the first student-athlete from the Atlantic Coast Conference to win the men’s javelin title since North Carolina’s Justin Ryncavage in 2006.
On his first throw of the evening, Deysel unleashed a throw of 81.75m to jump in front of the field by more than three meters. Florida’s Leikel Cabrera Gay managed to pull within 2.7 meters on his third attempt, but Deysel’s initial mark proved to be enough to win the individual championship.
North Carolina’s Tommy Kitchell added a second-place finish in the men’s shot put to highlight the ACC’s opening day performances. The Tar Heel senior launched a personal-best throw of 20.74 meters (68-0.5) to finish as a First Team All-American and national runner-up.
After the first day of competition, Miami leads all ACC schools with 10 points, sitting in a tie for sixth place on the leaderboard. North Carolina logged nine points to sit tied for ninth, while Virginia Tech’s five points on the first day are tied for 19th place.
