Nancy Scott of Aldershot, Farnham and District and Ross Gollan from East Sutherland AC, representing Scotland North, were victorious in the UKA Inter-Counties Mountain Race held over the Pen y Ghent course on Saturday (June 14), Ian Hartman reports.

The race incorporated the UKA Mountain Running Championships and was also used for selecting the England team for the Snowdon International Race on July 19.

Settle Harriers hosted the event at Horton-in-Ribblesdale, North Yorkshire. There had been warnings of heavy thunderstorms the previous day but apart from a few heavy showers, one of which coincided with the start of the female race at 12:30pm, the weather was ideal for running. Even the early morning mist on the summit of Pen y Ghent had cleared away by then.

Nancy Scott won the Inter-Counties race and UKA Mountain Running Championships ahead of Elle Twentyman (Derbyshire/Rugby & Northampton AC).

Isla Paterson (Gala Harriers), who was not representing a county, was third, with fourth-placed runner, Eve Pannone (Cumbria/Ambleside AC) taking the Inter-Counties bronze medal.

Fifteen counties fielded complete teams with the Yorkshire team taking the gold medals, one point ahead of Cumbria with Surrey two points further back in third.

By the time the men’s race started 30 minutes later, the storm had passed over. Ross Gollan repeated his victory over leading under-23, Finlay Grant (Derbyshire/Dark Peak Fell Runners) in the recent UKA Fell & Hill championship in Scotland, with Oscar Subuh-Symons (Surrey) taking third.

There were 23 men’s teams. Yorkshire’s men emulated their women’s team with victory by five points over Derbyshire and Lancashire with the latter taking silver medals on account of their final runner finishing one place ahead of the last counter from Derbyshire.
