2025 European Athletics U23, Day 2 in Bergen, Norway: Germany's Men sweep Discus, Ireland wins 10,000m!

Konate 825, fast men’s 800m heats


BERGEN (NOR, Jul 18): Erwan Konate of France improved to 825 (1.7) U23NR to win the long jump ahead of Bulgaria’s Bozhidar Sarâboyukov 821 (1.4) and Kasperi Vehmaa of Finland 797w (2.1) at the European Athletics U23 Championships. German clean sweep in the men’s discus, Steven Richter (64.67) over Mika Sosna (63.42) and Marius Karges (62.20), Romania’s Alexia Ioanna Dospin leaped to 14.05 (1.8) PB in the triple jump ahead of Clémence Rougier of France 13.93w (2.3) and Serbia’s Aleksandrija Mitrović 13.84 (1.8). 100m titles for Karolína Maňasová of Czechia in 11.30 (-1.3) over Briton Nia Wedderburn-Goodison (11.38) and Polyniki Emmanouilidou of Greece (11.44), and for Frenchman Jeff Erius in 10.28 (-2.0) ahead of Nsikak Ekpo from Netherlands (10.30) and Spain’s Abel Jordan (10.31).

In short hurdles, Alicja Sielska of Poland won in 12.91 (-1.7) from Hungary’s Anna Tóth (13.02) and Tereza Čorejová of Slovakia (13.05), and Austria’s Enzo Diessl in 13.46 (-1.8) over Belgium’s Zeno van Neygen (13.54 PB) and Elie Bacari (13.56). Aileen Kuhn of Germany in the women’s hammer with 72.53 PB ahead of Ireland’s Nicola Tuthill (70.90) and Valentina Savva of Cyprus (70.22 NR). Ireland’s Anika Thompson topped the 10,000m in 32:31.47 U23NR from Germans Kira Weis (32:36.52 PB) and Carolina Schäfer (33:04.3 PB), and Andrin Huber of Switzerland scored 8188 PB to win the decathlon from Jeff Tesselaar of Netherlands (8108) and Antoine Ferranti of France (8032), Croatia’s Roko Farkaš, leading after the first day, had no height in the pole vault.

However the best performances came from the 800m heats, with Italy’s Francesco Pernici winning the first heat in 1:44.08 CR (also stadium record improving Wilson Kipketer’s 1:44.33 from 1996), ahead of Niels Laros (1:44.19), Thomas Marques de Andrade of France (1:44.50) and Ronaldo Olivo (1:44.87, did not qualify for final), PBs for all, and Briton Justin Davies winning the second heat in 1:44.67 over Switzerland’s Ramon Wipfli (1:44.92 U23NR). Antti Sainio set a new Finnish NR in the 400m hurdles semifinals (48.97).
