What I said to #BBCSports on #USATFOutdoor, report 1, August 2, 2025
Spoke with BBC Sports this morning. Here is what Lee and I chatted about:
1. Quincy Wilson, WU18 at 44.10, did not qualify for the 400m semi-finals; he looked exhausted!
2. Kenny Bednarek, from a town in Wisconsin, won in the 100m in PB 9.79. Courtney Lindsay, 9.82 PB, was second. T’Mar McCallum was third, 9.83. Trayvon Bromell, 2016 Olympian, 9.84, is fourth, 2019 World champ, Christian Coleman, fifth in 9.86, seasonal best. Trayvon and Christian did as well as they could have!
3. Melissa Jefferson-Wooden won in WL 10.65; she dominated the race. Kayla While took second in PB 10.84, Aleia Hobbs, made the team in 10.92 in third, broke down in the mixed zone, a pronounced reaction to the tremendous pressure for these athletes to make the team.
4. Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone ran 49.59. She ran so easily she could have had hot tea and a sack lunch (for BBC audience).
4. 1,500 meters will be hot! Ethan Strand and Hobbs Kessler broke the old US meet record in heat one. Cole Hocker, the only champion, decimated the meet record with a time of 3:32.57, and Yared Nuguse, so noted, followed with a time of 3:32.66.
4a. In Women’s 1,500m, Nikki Hiltz, best tactician, Sinclare Johnson, American record holder, and Emily Mackay looked outstanding.
What I wanted to add:
4b. Kyle Garland goes 8869 in the decathlon, just behind Ashton Eaton and Dan O’Brien on the US lists, #10 in the world.
4c. Anna Hall won the heptathlon in 6,899 points. She scored 7,032 points in two months in Gotzis.
4d. Emily Infeld won her first U.S. title in 10,000m. Emily won the WC bronze in the 10,000m in Beijing 2015. Emily outsprinted Elise Cranny in a tough finish.
4e. Nico Young, recent AR at 5,000m, outkicked Grant Fisher, 2016 Olympic bronze at 5,000m and 10,000m.
