2025 Summer Mileage, Week 5, Day 1, August 4, 2025, easy day, Focus is on Cole Hocker

Monday, warm-up, 45-60 minutes, easy running, roads, or sidewalks, cooldown.

Our focus athlete, Cole Hocker, knows how to win races!

Cole Hocker has won the last two Olympic Trials 1,500 meters! In 2024, Cole Hocker went on the inside lane, as Josh Kerr, and Jakob Ingebrigtsen focused on each other, and won the gold medal. Cole Hocker did it the old fashioned way, he earned it.

Cole Hocker has had a challenging 2025. He has not won races, and many were saying that Paris was, well, a fluke. Well, it wasn’t and I am happy to report that. Cole Hocker seldom races where there are not big players and he is always challenged in his races to bring his A plus game!

In the 1,500 meters, on Saturday, Jonah Koech of Under Armour outsprinted everyone to win the 1,500 meters, Eric Strand, a NIKE pro for three weeks, took second, and Cole Hocker held on for third! Hobbs Kessler was fourth and Yared Nuguse was fifth. The kicks were real kicks as everyone took off in the last 150 meters.

Cole Hocker remembered that on Sunday as he controlled the pace for six laps, dropped back and when the pace picked up, came on the inside and went past Grant Fisher and Nico Young, the 10,000m winner, to take gold in the 5,000m! Not sure Cole Hocker will race the 5,000m in Tokyo, but it sure was exciting! Remember, always have a kick!

In his sophomore year of track, Steve Prefontaine did not make the state meet. He was embarrassed and upset with himself. That summer, he planned, with his coaches, a ruthless series of training runs over the summer. He not only did mileage, he made himself stronger. He made himself tougher. That fall, Steve Prefontaine was ready for his junior season of high school cross country.
